What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics are specialties of dental medicine that deal with the diagnosis and treatment of malocclusions.

Malocclusion or the popular 'incorrect bite' can be caused by incorrect position, number or dimension of the teeth, incorrect relationships between the jaws or the result of a combination of theses possibilities. Correction of these anomalies is achieved by controled dental movements associated with changes in facial bone growth.

Who can benefit from
orthodontic treatments?

The treatments with dental appliances can be carried begining with the age of 6-7 years old.

The patient's age can influence the recommended orthodontic approach, with treatments being tailored according to several factors: the patient's growth period, the type of abnormality to be treated, and the list of goals that the doctor sets with the patient in developing the treatment plan.

When do we need
orthodontic treatment?

Wearing braces is recommended both for correcting dental and facial aesthetics and for correcting occlusion (bite). An incorrect bite can affect the health of the teeth, gums and temporomandibular joint over time. Malocclusion can cause tooth decay, tooth wear, the development or worsening of periodontal disease, gum recession, cracks (popping), TMJ pain, mouth opening limitations, craniocervical muscle pain, headaches, digestive disorders and more.

Who performs the
orthodontic treatments?

Orthodontic treatment with dental appliances is carried out exclusively by doctors specialised in orthodontics and dento-facial orthopaedics. Orthodontists undergo a three-year residency program, which is carried out after completion of the Faculty of Dentistry. The aim of the residency program is to acquire sufficient knowledge of the correct diagnosis, planning and implementation of orthodontic treatment.
