Self-ligating braces
Self-ligating orthodontic appliances have a more practical, clip-type system for holding the archwire in the brackets (self-ligating system). It holds the archwire in the slot using clips instead of elastic ligatures, allowing the archwire to slide better in the brackets, reducing friction and pressure on the teeth.
Self-ligating technology is one of the important innovations in orthodontics, because it manages to increase the comfort level felt by the patient and revolutionises the structure of a classic fixed orthodontic appliance. A self-ligating fixed appliance has an innovative structure, which allows teeth to be straightened and maloclusions to be corrected much more easily, requiring far fewer office visits for activation / adjustment.

Advantages of self-ligating orthodontic appliances
- Faster orthodontic treatments.
- Reduced friction, promotes easier transmission of forces to the teeth.
- The interval between two activations is 8-14 weeks.
- Fewer appointments are needed at longer intervals. During all this time, the action of the appliance is exerted with the same intensity and consistency.
- Appointments are shorter. The duration of an in-office session is shorter than with conventional orthodontic appliances, due to the simplicity and speed with which the archwire is changed.
- Less discomfort, because the archwire transmits less force to the teeth than with traditional braces.
- No need for metal wire ligatures, which can injure the cheek inside.
- They are more hygienic.

Disadvantages for self-ligating orthodontic appliances
- It involves higher treatment costs because of the advanced technology it promotes.
