How is the Invialign orthodontic appliance installed?

Invisalign orthodontic appliance consist of clear aligners, composite attachments and possibly other accessories. (in difficult cases).

What are attachments and what do they do?

Attachments are small composite structures, like filling material, bonded to the teeth, individualized to each patient's tooth colour and personalized treatment plan. Each attachment has a very specific shape providing anchorage and pressure points that allow more precise control of tooth movement. Applying attachments is very easy, as is removing them, without pain or great discomfort for the patient. DOES NOT affect tooth enamel.

How are attachments applied?

• Application of a retractor - removes cheeks and lips, so as not to wet the tooth surface with saliva (contact of the tooth surface with saliva would prevent proper adhesion of attachments)
• Enamel surface conditioning to promote attachment bonding
• Washing and drying teeth
• Application of adhesive
• Light curing of the adhesive
• Applying attachments using a special glove
• Light curing of attachments and tray removal
• Removal of excess adhesive.

The attachments remain bonded to the teeth throughout treatment or just for a period of time, depending on the type of tooth movement over which the aligners are inserted. The aligners are transparent sleeves that are inserted and removed for cleaning teeth and during meals, and are changed every 7, 10 or 14 days as instructed by the orthodontist, by the patient.
